First of all, as a diabetic one must be mindful of all added sugar. There are various types of sugar that require awareness. High fructose corn syrup is especially dangerous. It is being used in processed foods from fruit drinks to granola bars. This further emphasizes the necessity of reading food and drink nutrition labels. High fructose corn syrup is a liquid sweetener very similar to sugar. It is inexpensive, thus widely used in processed foods and sweetened drinks.
It is reported that overweight and obese individuals regularly consume foods containing high fructose corn syrup. This can lead to weight gain.
Sweetened drinks are the cause of blood sugar spikes that occur much faster than with solid food. This is due to the speedy digestion of liquids.
According to Diabetes Care Volume 33, Number 11, page 2477, December 2010 sugar sweetened beverages have become the primary source of added sugars in the US diet. There are positive associations between the consumption of these beverages and weight gain in both children and adults.
